Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rock is formed by weathering and erosion
Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are those that are formed from the collection of sediments from pre- existing rocks or through organic materials.

Objectives Students will be able to identify how the earth is affected by long- term and short- term geological cycles and the influence of man. SPI 7.7.2 Label a diagram that depicts the three different rock types. SPI 7.7.3 Identify the major processes that drive the rock cycle. Success Criteria:  I can describe how sedimentary rocks are formed.

Sedimentary Rock Video Fill out the next column in the flowchart as we watch the video.

Sedimentary Rock Wind, Water, Ice, Sunlight and Gravity all cause rock to weather into fragments. Erosion moves these fragments or sediment from on place to another.  Eventually the sediment are deposited over older layers. Layers become compacted and cemented by dissolved minerals that form a natural cement.

Examples of Sedimentary Rock See pages 372-375 for more pictures

Three types of Sedimentary Rock 1. Clastic Sedimentary Rock-made of fragments of rocks cemented together by a mineral such as calcite or quartz Examples Sandstone Siltstone Shale

Three types of Sedimentary Rock 2.  Chemical Sedimentary Rock- forms from solutions of dissolved minerals and water. Example: Halite 3.  Organic Sedimentary Rock-forms from fossils Example: Limestone and Coal

Sedimentary Rock Sturctures Stratification- process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers Ripple marks-records of the motion of wind or water waves Mud cracks-when fine-grained sediments at the bottom of shallow water are exposed to air and dry out.

Racetrack Playa Sedimentary rock is formed from sediment that have been cemented and compacted together.   But where did those sediment come from? Let's discuss types of erosion.

Racetrack Playa Video As you read through the article, underline the different types of erosion that are discussed.

2 minute Post-it Journal Explain how sedimentary rocks are formed.
