All scale drawings must have a scale written on them. Scales are usually expressed as ratios. Normally for maps and buildings the ratio: Drawing length:

Drawing to Scale. What does it mean to say something is “to scale”?
A map scale represents the Earth’s surface drawn smaller than it really is. A map is drawn to scale. Scale means that a small distance on the map stands.
It means that one unit on a map
USING MAP SCALES. Map Scale  A scale is a statement of the relationship between distances on a map and distances in real life.  A drawing that is made.

Scale: Is it an accurate representation? World Geography Scale: Is it an accurate representation?

What is Scale? Scale drawings show objects which have been made smaller or larger but which are in exact proportion to the real object

Expressions of Scale Stated Scale E.g. 1 cm = 10 Km This means that one cm on a map represents 10 km in real life

Expressions of Scale Line Scale E.g. 10 0 10 20 30 40 KM The line shows what distances on the map represent in real life

Expressions of Scale Fractional Scale or Representational Fraction E.g. 1:200 000 This means 1 cm represents 200 000 cm in real life It also means that the map is 1/200 000 the size of the real place

Practice with Scale Use the notes provided to complete the next activity
