TEPAC Review

Directions: In the next examples, identify what part of the TEPAC chart you are viewing. Explain how you know! Also, you must identify if the example uses academic language or not! For example, Jack turned fiercely to Piggy and yelled ‘You shut up!’ Piggy wilted” (Golding, 42). E with academic language In other words, Jack told Piggy to shut up and it hurt Piggy’s feelings. P- with academic language We can infer Jack is a savage because the quote demonstrates how Jack uses physical violence and intimidation to gain control of an audience or in this case, group of boys. A civilized person would calmly and rationally lay out their issues and concerns, but this was not the case with Jack. Answer: “A” academic language is used!

What is wrong with the following examples? Analysis Box: Jack is a savage because he is mean to piggy. ANSWER: Explanation of claim missing along with reference to evidence or quote. Missing academic language Concluding box: Jack is civil because he wants to have rules in the group. Having rules is important because it will ensure all the boys work together to get rescued from the island. Correct answer: Should only include the claim and the evidence…NO EXPLANATION. Missing academic language Paraphrase box: In other words, Jack hit piggy and piggy’s glasses flew off and hit a pile of rocks. No issues.
