Writing a Dialectical Entry Choose a quotation that both demonstrates literary merit and contains something you can respond to on a personal level. Annotate the passage in detail Organize your ideas into personal responses and literary analysis. Set up context and insert your quotation. Use you hand-outs to guide writing your first draft.
Organizing Your Writing Establish context for your quotation and copy it. (1-3 sentences plus quotation) Personal Response— 200-300 words. Use first person Literary Analysis—Analyze writing techniques and what they do in the quotation(often thematic or characterization) 200-300 words Write a few sentences that concludes your entry. Add a works cited and scoring section.
Final Reminders In your context section, make sure I know the specific situation, and if applicable who is involved in any conversations. Make sure that you correctly indent paragraphs and quotations I like sub-headings for each section. Include a works cited for the novel and any outside sources.
