Motion Recognizing, Describing, and Measuring Motion.
Section 1: Describing Motion. Speed Speed is how far you travel over a period of time. Speed is expressed in the formula s=d/t (speed = distance/time).
 You can use weighted averages to solve uniform motion problems when the objects you are considering are moving at constant rates or speeds.
Describing Motion What is speed? Think of the fastest and slowest speed limits near the school, on the roads in front of your homes, or on a highway.

Velocity

Velocity Measures a change in position over a period of time AND in a certain direction Uses the SAME formula as speed Example 4: A plane traveling from Los Angeles to Atlanta is traveling 2000 miles in 4 hours, what is its velocity?

Velocity = Distance ÷ Time Example 4 A plane traveling from Los Angeles to Atlanta is traveling 2000 miles in 4 hours, what is its velocity? Velocity = Distance ÷ Time V = 2000 mi ÷ 4 hours V = 500 mph EAST

Interpret The Graph Below:

Interpret The Graph Below: The graph shows that the objects velocity does not change as time passes. It shows constant velocity.

Interpret The Graph Below:

Interpret The Graph Below: The graph shows that the objects velocity is increasing as time passes – it is accelerating. The straight line shows that it is constant acceleration.
