Physical and Sexual Development Chapter 4: Adolescence Physical and Sexual Development

Physical Development What’s it like to be a teenager (in America)? What are some initiation rites?

Physical Development Puberty- sexual maturation; end of childhood. Reactions to puberty: Self-conscious Want to conform (be like your friends) Judge yourself

Sexual Development Sexual attitudes- differ based on culture. Teens are having sex at much younger ages. 1 million teen pregnancies a year. 3 million teen STD cases a year. Children of teen moms tend to become teen parents themselves. Teenagers are more careful today than 15 years ago- unless drugs/alcohol are involved!

Theories of Adolescence Is teenage-dom a period of “storm and stress”? G. Stanley Hall: Adolescents are like “grown animals in a cage”. Or is the stress of being a teenager a cultural thing? Margaret Mead: In some cultures, being a teen is more enjoyable.

Robert Havinghurst: 9 Tasks to Master Before Adulthood. Accept your physical makeup and acquire a masculine or feminine gender role. Develop appropriate relations with age-mates of both sexes. Become emotionally independent of parents. Be assured that you will one day be financially independent. Decide on and prepare for a vocation (career)

Havinghurst’s Tasks 6. Develop cognitive skills for social competence. 7. Understand/achieve socially responsible behavior. 8. Prepare for marriage and family. 9. Acquire appropriate and harmonious values.

Your assignment: Explain/express in a drawing, collage, comic strip, essay, or poem why one or more of these 9 tasks may be difficult to achieve for teenagers. What obstacles do teenagers face? Why? *Use page 95 You must choose at least one.
