Parachutes Part 3

Daily Objective Air is all around objects. Air resistance affects how things move.

Vocabulary Parachute - A piece of cloth that catches air to slow a person or object that is falling Air Resistance - When air pushes on an object moving through air and slows the object down

Introduction What is a parachute? Have you ever seen one? How does it work? Today we are going to find the answers to these questions.

Observations and Discussions Parachute Making First we are going to make a parachute. Use adhesive dots to secure a piece of string at each corner of a paper towel. Bring the other ends of the strings together and run them through a jumbo paper clip. Fold up the strings to form a loop. The paper clip should hang from the loop. Wrap a dot around the strings to secure the loop.

Observation and Discussion Parachute Release Lift the parachute as high as you can and release. What happens when you fly your parachutes? What made the parachute float down so slowly? Where is the air?

Vocabulary Review Parachute - A piece of cloth that catches air to slow a person or object that is falling Air Resistance - When air pushes on an object moving through air and slows the object down

What We Learned A parachute falls slowly because the air __________ against it. ____________________ slows the parachute down. pushes Air resistance
