The Dinner Party Vocabulary

The Dinner Party - Vocabulary naturalist – (noun) one who studies plants and animals in their natural environment. The official and his wife are giving a dinner party to officials and an American naturalist. veranda – (noun) porch The boy places a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors. contracting – (verb) tightening She stared ahead her muscles contracting slightly. rafters – (noun) beams that support the roof He looked up at the rafters, but they were bare. commotion – (noun) an action that causes a lot of movement and noise. He knows the commotion would frighten. sobers – (verb) makes serious The tone of his voice sobers everyone. faint – (adj.) dim or slight A faint smile lights up the woman’s face.
