Transcendentalism 1830s through 1860s

What is Transcendentalism? Subgroup of Romanticism Romanticism was all about individuality, nature, and emotions over reason A literary movement that believes truth exists beyond reason and experience In order to learn about God, the universe, and self, one had to transcend his physical experience

So what does that mean? Don’t place value in the material parts of life Instead, go out and DO stuff! Think about how you relate to everything around you Connect this to the butterfly effect A butterfly flaps its wings in PG, and a hurricane brews in the pacific By discovering how you’re a part of this world, you can transcend this world and know God

Main authors of Transcendentalism Ralph Waldo Emerson Nature Self-Reliance The Snowstorm Henry David Thoreau Walden Civil Disobedience

Main Ideas of Transcendentalism Nonconformity Self-Reliance Free Thought Confidence Importance of Nature

Nonconformity Be YOU! Don’t let others influence you “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drum. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.” – Thoreau “Imitation is suicide.” - Emerson

Self-Reliance Don’t wait for others to do your work for you; rely on yourself! Sub-ideas Solitude What’s the difference between loneliness and solitude? Moral Compass We know in our gut what’s right and wrong Lean on your intuition

Free Thought Individuality & Spontaneity Respect the ideas of others, even if you disagree “It takes two to speak the truth: one to speak, and another to hear.” - Thoreau

Confidence Be confident in yourself Stick to your ideas, even when they’re challenged “Envy is ignorance.” - Thoreau

Importance for Nature Nature is pure, innocent, and untouched by evil Civilization has been corrupted Need to return to nature to return to purity Which is the way to get closer to God

Major Differences Romanticism Transcendentalism No connection with God Source of life came from your senses and emotions Relationship with God Source of life came from your gut and intuition
