The seed was major step in the evolution of land plants. It allowed plants to be able to colonize dryer areas of land.

Presentation transcript:

Gymnosperms and Angiosperms What adaptations do seed plants have that enable them to live away from water?

Characteristics of Seed Plants Seed-bearing plants have several adaptations that allow them to live away from water Fertilization Males produce pollen (male gamete) that can be blown by wind or carried by insects Female gametes (eggs) are protected by either cones or flowers from drying out Seeds Embryo is surrounded by a food source and a protective coat Seed coat prevents it from drying out

Characteristics of Seed Plants Seed Dispersal Seeds often have specialized structures that allow them to be dispersed by wind, water, or animals

Gymnosperms Plants that reproduce with seeds in cones Groups: Cycads Ginkgo Conifers

Angiosperms Plants that reproduces with seeds in flowers and produce fruits Groups Monocotyledons Dicotyledons
