Physical and Chemical Changes Notes 10/5

What’s the difference? Physical Change Chemical Change A physical change is any change NOT involving a change in the substance's chemical identity. Here are some examples: (1) any phase change. Moving between solid, liquid and gas involves only the amount of energy in the sample Chemical change is any change that results in the formation of new chemical substances. At the molecular level, chemical change involves making or breaking of bonds between atoms.

Physical Change indicators Texture Color Temperature Shape Change of State (Boiling Point and Melting Point are significant factors in determining this change.)

Chemical Change Indicators Change in Temperature Change in Color Noticeable Odor (after reaction has begun) Formation of a Precipitate Formation of Bubbles
