Mentos Coke Experiment Brylee Lutman Daniel Volk Liam Eades

Hypothesis Different types of Mentos affect the size of the soda reaction.

Materials Regular Mentos Fruit Mentos Sugar-free Mentos 2 liters of Coke Graduated cylinder Yard stick iPhone 6 37g of Mentos/ 300mL of Coke

Procedure Fill graduated cylinder with 300 ml of regular Coke. Place one pack of Mentos in the graduated cylinder. Using a meter stick, record the height of the reaction caused by the Mentos in Coke. Make observations on the reaction. Empty graduated cylinder, repeat experiment with both fruit- flavored Mentos and then with sugar-free Mentos.

Trial #1: Regular Mentos Observations No reaction

Trial #2: Fruit-flavored Mentos Observations No reaction

Trail #3: Sugar-free Mentos Observation Small reaction Bubbled Reaction caused fill line to raise slightly.

Possible Errors Loss of carbonation in transfer from bottle Contaminated cylinder Dropped Mentos Stale Mentos Stale Coke The Coke was the wrong temperature *Data was not taken accurately enough. We were not able to record actual mL risen by the reacting Coke per each experiment.

Conclusion This experiment failed because of a loss of carbonation when the Coke was poured into the graduated cylinder, causing a lack of a reaction. We know this because of the “fizzing” reaction that occurred when it was poured, which caused a loss of carbonation. To test one of our possible errors (loss of carbonation), we pored leftover coke into a funnel leading to a smaller bottle to preserve carbonation. It is did fizz and bubble more, therefore loss of carbonation was an confirmed as an issue.

Conclusion The result of experiment was inconclusive. In order to confirm which Mentos affect the Coke the most, we would need to retry the experiment by putting Mentos in actual Coke bottles, rather than in graduated cylinders (although sugar-free can be inferred to produce the biggest reaction).
