Scientific Question How much salt (tbs) added to ½ cup of water will make a paper clip float?

Background I always wondered how you can float in water with no effort. So when I saw people were able to float in the Dead Sea I figured out it was because of the high salt levels, so I wondered how much salt it takes to make a paper clip float like the people in the Dead Sea.

Hypothesis If I add 12 tablespoons of salt to ½ cup of water then the paper clip placed in the water will float/suspend.

Variables Independent-Amount of salt added to water (tbs) Dependent-How much salt (tbs) added to water will make the paper clip float Constants- Amount of water, paperclip, amount of salt added, brand of salt (Kroger)

Procedure Fill a clear plastic cup with ½ cup of water Add one paper clip to water Add 2 tbs of salt to water Record amount of salt and see if paperclip moved Do steps 3 & 4 again until paperclip floats

Data

Data Continued 1 2 3 4 5 6 Amount Of Salt (tbs) 2 tbs 4 tbs 6 tbs Trail Number 1 2 3 4 5 6 Amount Of Salt (tbs) 2 tbs 4 tbs 6 tbs 8 tbs 10 tbs 12 tbs Sink or Float Sink Float

Conclusion The question asked how much salt does it take to make a paper clip float. For the experiment I put two tbs each trial into a cup of water with a paper clip in it. After the experiment was finished measured how much salt it took to make the paper clip float by adding up the tally marks I used to represent each tablespoon of salt I added I. I found that it took 08 tbs of salt to make the paper clip float. Therefore, my hypothesis was not proven to be correct. If I had to conduct this experiment again I would try different salt brands to see if they have the same results.
