All quantities in Physics can be categorized as either a scalar or a vector quantity. A scalar quantity has magnitude (amount) only without direction.
Velocity And Acceleration Velocity: Velocity: Both speed and direction of an object V=d/t. Acceleration: Acceleration: The rate at which velocity changes.
THIS MINI-LESSON WILL COVER: What is the difference between scalars and vector quantities? What is the difference between distance and displacement ?
MOTION. REST  When a body does not change its position with respect to time and its surroundings, the body is said to be at rest.

Distance and Displacement

Motion An object is in motion when its position with respect to another object is changing. If no change than no motion is perceived

Distance and Displacement Distance: The length of a path covered by an object between its initial and final positions. This will vary depending on the route chosen. EXAMPLE: Marble rolls= mm or cm (millimetres or centimetres) Car travels= m or Km ( metres or kilometres) Displacement: The shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object.

Displacement vs Distance

Combining Displacements Displacement is a vector This is a quantity that has a magnitude and a direction Magnitude= size length or amount Arrows on a graph are used to represent vectors. The length of an arrow shows the magnitude of a vector

Examples Combining displacements Vector addition is the combining of vector magnitudes and directions EX: 5 km right 10 km right 5 + 10= 15km right 10 km right 3 km left 10 – 3= 7 km right
