Chemical Bonding Almost done!! Yeyyyyyy!
Introduction Bond – The sharing or transferring of electrons to form compounds/molecules (2 or more elements/atoms) Which atoms do not form bonds and why?
Introduction Answer: Group 18 (noble gases) b/c their outer shell is full!!
Introduction Why do atoms form bonds? Answer: to fill up their outer shell (get 8!)
Ionic Bonds Formed when an atom(s) gives up 1 or more electrons and another atom(s) takes 1 or more electrons. Occurs between a positive ion (metals) and negative ion (nonmetals) ion b/c opposite charges attract.
Ionic Bonds Always occurs between a metal and nonmetal. The result of the bond is a neutral compound (charges cancel out).
Covalent Bond Formed when electrons are shared between atoms. Always between 2 or more nonmetal atoms. Ex: O2 CO2
Metallic Bond Formed when electrons are easily kicked out from a large group of metal atoms creating metal ions. Occurs in metal atoms only! The electrons are “freely floating” throughout the ions.
Metallic Bond The negative electrons holds the positive metal ions together (opposite charges attract).
Lewis Dot Diagrams Represent the # of valence electrons an atom has and the bonds it can form. How do you find the valence electrons? Answer: Group #
