Short Story Terms “The Gift of the Magi”

Irony – Contrast between what you expect to happen and what actually happens.

Allusion – When the author makes reference to another piece of literature, text, or cultural element.

Characterization – The author’s manner of developing characters.

Direct Characterization - When the author specifically tells reader about character

Indirect Characterization - The readers figure out character based on actions, words, etc.

Protagonist - Main character (not always the “good guy” though)

Antagonist - Character or force opposing main character
