H2. Personal Project Starting Points

Analyze What? Who? When? Where? How? Why?

Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat

Ed Ruscha http://www.edruscha.com/ Good art should elicit a response of 'Huh? Wow!' as opposed to 'Wow! Huh?‘ When I began painting, all my paintings were of words which were gutteral utterances like Smash, Boss, Eat. Those words were like flowers in a vase.

Barbara Kruger http://www.barbarakruger.com/ Do you know why language manifests itself the way it does in my work? It's because I understand short attention spans. I had to figure out how to bring the world into my work. I'd always been a news junkie, always read lots of newspapers and watched the Sunday morning news shows on TV and felt strongly about issues of power, control, sexuality and race.

Task 1 Collect a selection of imagery for each artist Research each artist – explore their intentions Complete an image analysis of your favourite work from each artist Task 2 Beauty Using one of the artists as a starting point, create an image that explores ideas of beauty. You can download and install the font files to help you with this.
