Breaking Down A Compound Lab Report 20.1 James Seymour

The purpose of this lab was to use electrolysis to break down a compound.

I believe by using electrolysis… Hypothesis

Materials 2 Test tubes Electrode Stand Sodium Sulfate Lab Scoop Plastic Spoon Wooden Splint Plastic Container Battery Wire connectors Lighter/Matches Water Materials

Procedure Place electrode stand in the plastic container. Add water to the container. Add two scoops of sodium sulfate to the water. Stir the solution with plastic spoon. Submerge one of the test tubes in the container of sodium sulfate. Place the tube over one of the electrodes, making sure the open end is below the liquid. Repeat steps 5-6 for the second tube. Connect the wires to the battery. Red on “+”; Black on “-”. Procedure

9. Disconnect battery after water level gets low. 10 9. Disconnect battery after water level gets low. 10. One member ignite the splint so it is burning. Remove one of the test tubes from the electrode. 11. With open end down place the splint at the mouth of the tube. Look and listen. 12. Record results in Table 1. 13. Repeat steps 10-12 for second test tube using a glowing splint. Procedure

This is where you write down any measurements, observations made, and data chart. Results

Conclusions Write a paragraph explaining the outcome of the lab. Was hypothesis right or wrong. If wrong explain why. Explain what you learned from this lab and if you met the objective. Any questions you may have. Things you may want to find out in another lab Conclusions
