Group Brainstorm (5 minutes) Why do people wage war? Use examples we have studied in class.

What I want you to take away… To look at the causes of war To think about the wars in terms of “justness” What is the nature of violent conflict?

Group Activity (20 minutes): “The Many Faces of War” Read introduction paragraph Review the various categories of war Apply one or more of the categories of war to the following conflicts: World War I World War II (all parts, separately) Korean War Vietnam War Persian Gulf War War on Terrorism Let’s discuss as a class.

Homework - Close Reading: “The Justification of War” First, copy the directions below on the back of the reading. Read the text silently, and highlight important information. On the left side of the document next to the highlighted parts, write down questions that you have. On the right side of the text, write down the author’s purpose for each paragraph.
