Rebuilding the Past I want you to think back to a time when you tried to put something back together. How did it break in the first place? I want you to explain what did you fix it so that it worked like it did before maybe better, or if it was a lost cause from the beginning.

Putting things back together Look at how the war ended Breakdown what the losses looked like Start looking at GA’s reconstruction Look at the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments Test Friday over SS8H6

Appomattox and the End In April of 1865 the Union and Confederate forces were starting to really deplete The Confederate forces were winning small battles and Union were winning large ones Grant and Lee met in Appomattox Virginia where Lee was surrounded Lee surrendered at the courthouse on April 9, 1865 ending the Civil War Six days later Lincoln was Assassinated making Andrew Johnson President

Total Losses There were over 750,000 reported deaths in the Civil War. One in four Soldiers that left home never came back Union Losses Lost over 140,000 in combat alone Disease claimed another 220,000 Roughly5% of the eligible male pop of North Confederate Losses Lost over 75,000 in combat alone Disease claimed another 220,000 also 20% of male pop

Georgia’s Reconstruction Reconstruction lasted about seven years in this country (1865-1872) Sherman’s March really crippled the way Georgian’s lived their lives Over 40,000 Georgians were either killed, wounded or lost a good chunk of their land Georgia had to reset militarily, politically, and economically US tried three phases to reconstruct after Civil War

13th Amendment Part of phase one which was Presidential Reconstruction by Johnson 10% of the Southern male population had to swear an oath to the Union Officially ended slavery in the United States Georgia was readmitted into the union temporarily in 1865

14th Amendment Alexander Stephens was made Senator As a former CSA vice president the Radical Republicans in congress hated them Northern senators were mad at how the south treated blacks Blacks were made citizens with all the rights of white citizens Congressional Reconstruction forced Southern states to fall in line and ratify the 13th and 14th under duress

15th Amendment Groups like the KKK developed to protest the rights of Blacks Military Reconstruction was a plan to use Union troops to make sure things happened, also a reorganization Gave black men the right to vote Georgia was officially readmitted in the Union in 1870 after being forced

16th Amendment . . . Instead of it being about an Income Tax I want you to create a new one On the rest of page 43 in your notebook I want you to describe what would be your 16th amendment would be In light of what you heard about the 13th, 14th, and 15th what would yours be about and explain it
