Elements of a Speech

What do all speeches need? Does anyone know the elements needed for a speech? Every speech needs the following: Hook Thesis (Your position) Background Information Main Points used to support the thesis Evidence used to bolster the points Conclusion

What is a hook? A hook is an attention grabber used to draw the audience into your speech. Examples of hooks include: An interesting fact An anecdote A thought provoking question

What is a thesis? A thesis is the central idea of a text or speech. A thesis is meant to answer a question and thus must take a side. Example thesis: J.K. Rowling is considerably more adept at writing than Stephenie Meyer.

What is background information? Background information is used to introduce the audience to the discussed topic. The audience is able to gain a better understanding of the situation and its complexity.

What are main points? Main points are used to prove the thesis. Example: Thesis: J.K. Rowling is a more adept writer than Stephenie Meyer. Main Point 1: J.K. Rowling makes fewer grammatical errors in her works. Main Point 2: The Harry Potter series explores more cerebral themes than the Twilight series.

What constitutes evidence? Evidence is the data used to support a main idea. The data can be facts, research, first-hand accounts, and personal history.

The conclusion No conclusion in a speech or paper should start with “In conclusion.” The conclusion is used to link the main ideas together and prove the thesis. The thesis is reworded and presented again to the audience. A “call to action” is often included to inspire the audience to adopt the speaker’s cause.
