Energy Traveling in Waves
What is a Wave? Sound and Light are forms of energy that travel in waves A wave is a repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter.
Waves Waves are oscillations that carry energy and information from one place to another. Examples of waves: light, sound, electricity in a wire, cell.

Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
Amplitude The max. distance the particles move from the “rest position” to: The more energy a wave has → The greater its amplitude Compression or rarefaction.
What is a wave? Waves are rhythmic disturbances that carry energy through matter or space A medium is the material through which a wave travels.
What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.

Today in your notebooks Left side items Right side items Wave sentences Intro to Energy and waves notes Transverse wave diagrams Transverse waves notes

Transverse Waves (Right) What is a transverse wave? 2) What are features of transverse waves? A Transverse wave is a type of wave that moves up and down (perpendicular) to the direction the energy travels. Perpendicular – at a right (90 degree) angle T 2. Amplitude: the distance the wave oscillates (goes up/down) from its resting position. The more the wave oscillates, the more energy it carries. Crest: high point trough: low point Wavelength: the distance from a point on one wave to the same point on the next wave

Question and answer 1. When something is “amped” up, what does that mean? 2. How is amplitude related to the amount of energy the wave carries? 3. Define length. 4. What is a wavelength?
