Freedmen’s Life After Slavery Blacks were confused about how far there freedom was extended Some stayed with masters Others rebelled and took the masters land Church was the focus of their life They could now become educated Unfortunately, discrimination for Blacks was still very common

Freedman’s Bureau Taught 200,000 Blacks how to read Founded by General Oliver O. Howard Est. March 3rd, 1865

Lincoln’s Plan 10% Plan- For the southern states to rejoin the Union , they had to accept emancipation and ten percent of its voters had to pledge to the Union Lincoln was very forgiving because his main goal was to keep the union together

The Wrath of the Radical Republicans Thought Lincoln’s plan was too accepting Came up with the Wade-Davis Bill Required that 50% had to pledge to the Union Lincoln vetoed the bill, the 10% plan remained dominant

The Split of Republicans Moderates Agreed with Lincoln Radicals Believed in stricter conditions for the South

The End of Lincoln’s Reign Lincoln was assassinated Left the uncertainty of the 10 percent plan staying enact

Our New President Johnson took over Made his own reconstruction policy Took away confederate right to vote States had to ratify 13th amendment Made confederates responsible for debts

Restrictions on the New Free Men Black Codes Blacks who walked off duty or jumped the contract were fined and given low wages Restrictions didn’t allow them to lease land or serve on a jury Punishment could lead to working on a chain gang Even though the slaves were now free , their living conditions were still harsh

The Government The Republicans were the strong, dominate party throughout the war After the war however, the south would have more power because Blacks had a full vote

RECONSTRUCTION ENDS December 6, 1865

Johnson , The Hated D: Vetoed many bills, including the Civil Rights Bill Republicans learned to override Johnsons vetoes to pass bills

14th Amendment Stated that All Blacks were citizens If Blacks were denied citizenship the electoral college representative would be lowered Former Confederates couldn’t old office Confederate debt was erased

Round Of Speeches Designed to get some Republicans out of Congress so Johnson could have more power The opposite intent happened , putting more Republicans into office

The principles and programs of Republicans Republicans had a veto proof Congress, and had no control over Construction. In the Senate the leader of the radicals was Charles Sumner. In the House the leader of the radicals was Thaddeus Stevens Radicals wanted to keep the South out of the Union to change its economy

Reconstruction Act March 2, 1867 the reconstruction act divided the south into 5 military zones Temporarily disfranchised confederates and had more guidelines for readmission of states. For it to pass they had to approve the 14th amendment that made all blacks citizens.

15th Amendment 1869, gave the blacks a right to vote In 1870 all of the states had complied with the standards of reconstruction, and in 1877 the rest of the states got their home rule back and reconstruction truly ended.

Compromise of 1877 Presidential election was a stalemate North got the president , Rutherford South was guaranteed that the army troops would be removed Reconstruction ended for real this time

Women Who Wanted Change Were disappointed by the newly added amendments because they did not include women Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton- petitioned against the 14th and 15th amendment for having the word ‘male’ in them for the first time ever

After the blacks were free Blacks became politically organized and their main ‘vehicle’ was the Union League. Later, it built Black churches and schools. Began to hold office, Hiram Revels and Blanche K. Bruce served. Southern whites hated seeing there former slaves ranking above them. They absolutely hated scalawags and carpetbaggers. Scalawagers- Southerners accused of selling out other southerners Carpetbaggers- Northerners accused of parasitically milking power and profit in a now-desolate South
