A Christmas Carol Act Two, Scenes 3 and 4

Focus At the end of this lesson we will have contrasted different types of Christmas and looked at the use of personification in the play.

The Yes/No game I am thinking of a famous person (or people). You are to take turns trying to guess who I am thinking of, by asking me questions. I can only reply with ‘Yes’ or ‘No. Who was I thinking of?

Personification Definition: when a thing or concept is represented as a person. The term "personification" may apply to: A description of an inanimate object as being a living person or animal. An example of a quality or idea.

Stave 3 What has Scrooge experienced so far, with the Ghost of Christmas Present?

Stave 3 Please follow along, as we continue reading Act 2, Scenes 3 and 4.

Different kinds of Christmas... Cratchit family Christmas Fred’s Christmas

The end of Scene 4 At the end of Scene 4, the ghost describes Ignorance and Want. Sketch Ignorance and Want, as they are described in the play. Why has Dickens / the playwright used personification here? What do Ignorance and Want represent?
