MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 Lord Louis Mountbatten was the last British Viceroy who finalised the independence of India. Mountbatten came to India in March 1947 and presented his plan on 3rd June 1947. PARTITION OF INDIA : The plan proposed two dominions of India and Pakistan. COMMONWEALTH : Both the new dominions would be free to join the Commonwealth and decide their relationship with it. BOUNDARY COMMISSION : There would be a Boundary Commission which would decide the extent of both the nations.

MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 PRINCELY STATES: The Princely States rule would end and they would be free to join either of the dominions or remain independent and decide their relationship with the British Commonwealth. CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY: Each of the dominions would have its own independent Constituent Assembly to finalise it Preamble and write its own Constitution. BENGAL AND PUNJAB: Bengal and Punjab would vote and decide whether they wanted partition or not. SINDH : The Legislative Assembly of Sindh would likewise decide separately its fate. N.W.F.P. : NWFP would have a plebiscite to decide whether it remain in India or join Pakistan.

MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 SYLHET : Sylhet would hold a referendum to decide if it would remain in Assam or join East Bengal. 10. TRANSFER OF POWER : It was decided to transfer power to India before June 1948.

MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 TWO DOMINIONS : THERE WOULD BE TWO NEW DOMINIONS NAMELY INDIA AND PAKISTAN COMMONWEALTH: BOTH DOMINIONS WOULD DECIDE TO JOIN THE COMMONWEALTH AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH IT.

MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 BOUNDARY COMMISSION : THERE WOULD BE A BOUNDARY COMMISSION WHICH WOULD FINALISE THE LINE OF CONTROL BETWEEN THE TWO NEW DOMINIONS PRINCELY STATES : THE RULE OF THE PRINCELY STATES WOULD END AND THEY WOULD BE FREE TO DECIDE TO JOIN EITHER OF THE NEW DOMINIONS OR REMAIN INDEPENDENT.

SINDH : LIKEWISE THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF SINDH WOULD DECIDE ITS OWN FATE

MOUNTBATTEN PLAN 3rd JUNE 1947 TRANSFER OF POWER: IT WAS FINALISED THAT THE TRANSFER OF POWER WOULD BE DONE BEFORE JUNE 1948. SYLHET : THE MUSLIM MAJORITY SYLHET WOULD DECIDE BY REFERENDUM TO BE IN INDIA OR PAKISTAN. NWFP : NWFP WOULD HAVE A PLEBISCITE TO DECIDE WHETHER IT WOULD REMAIN IN INDIA OR JOIN PAKISTAN
