What is Photosynthesis? Part 1 By Christa Joy Unless noted, all photos from: www.freedigitalphotos.net/

All living things need food in order to survive.

People need food to survive.

Our pets need food to survive.

Even fish need food to survive.

So what about plants?

Do plants need food to survive?

What kind of food do plants need?

Plants need water.

Plants need soil.

Plants need sunlight.

Once plants have these things, they can turn them into food.

When plants turn energy into food, it is called photosynthesis.

There are special things inside a plant can make this happen.

These special things are called cells.

These cells have something called chlorophyll.

The chlorophyll will take the sunlight and turn it into food for the plant.

The plant still needs water and soil.

This food is called glucose. It is a type of sugar.

Glucose is a sugar that makes plants grow.

Turning energy into glucose is called photosynthesis.

Plants are pretty cool.
