Symbolism in chapter 2 Eng11 – Ms. Do

The Valley of Ashes In this chapter Fitzgerald writes about the Valley of Ashes. He also mentions dust and smoke (at the party). All three of these reappear numerous times throughout the novel. Respond in a short analytical paragraph (you only need one piece of evidence): What do they symbolize? Consider: Who lives in the Valley of Ashes? How is it described (diction)? How is it different from West/East Egg?

The eyes of tj eckleburg A billboard with the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg is also an important symbol in this chapter. Reread p. 23. Describe the billboard. Then, respond in a short analytical paragraph (you only need one piece of evidence): What do you think these eyes represent? Consider: What/who do the eyes look out on? Who was its original owner? What happened to him?
