MATTER

WHAT IS MATTER? MATTER MAKES UP EVERYTHING, FROM THE AIR WE BREATHE TO THE PLANET WE LIVE ON. What are examples of matter? Water, sand, glass, iron, cooking oil, mist, oxygen

IF MATTER MAKES UP EVERYTHING THEN WHAT MAKES UP MATTER? Matter is made up of extremely small particles called Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter and therefore life. Atoms can only seen by very powerful microscopes. Atoms can be found alone or in groups called molecules. By joining together molecules can form large networks called lattices and crystals. ATOMS.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER All the properties of matter that do not involve chemical reactions. State – solid, liquid or gas. Colour e.g. ice is transparent. Temperature – how hot or cold is a substance.

Volume – amount of space the substance takes up. Conductivity – ability to conduct electricity or heat. Volume – amount of space the substance takes up. Density – mass per unit volume of a substance. Mass – amount of matter in an object.

Melting Point – temperature at which a heated solid melts into a liquid. Freezing Point – temperature at which a cooling liquid turns into a solid. Boiling Point – temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas by boiling.

Example: What are the properties of ice? Physical Property Ice State Solid Colour Transparent Density 0.9 Melting Point 0°C Boiling Point 100°C Electrical conductivity Good Heat conductivity Poor Smell No smell

STATES OF MATTER Matter Living Non-Living Solid Liquid Gas The three states of matter are? They all are made up of ________. particles

PARTICLE ARRANGMENT SOLID LIQUID GAS

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE NATURE OF MATTER Is matter made up of one large particle or many smaller particles? Is all matter made up of the same type of particles? Are all particles of matter the same size? Are the particles of matter moving?

EXPERIMENTS 1-5

PARTICLE ARRANGEMENTS: SOLIDS The motion of the atoms.

PARTICLE ARRANGEMENTS: LIQUIDS The motion of the atoms.

PARTICLE ARRANGEMENTS: GAS

PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND GASES

Have a fixed shape but may be flexible Take the shape of a container SOLID LIQUID GAS Have a fixed shape but may be flexible Take the shape of a container Are often crystals Do not form crystals Are dense Are not dense Are not compressible Are compressible Cannot be poured Can be poured Have a fixed volume Vary in volume
