Unit Two: Integers Lesson 2.1

What You’ll Learn Model integers using colored tiles. Add integers using colored tiles and number lines. Subtract integers using colored tiles and number lines. Solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of integers.

Why is this important?? We use integers everyday. Weather, finances, sports, geography and science all use integers.

Key Vocabulary Positive Number - a number that is above zero. Negative Number – a number that is below zero.

Representing Integers Tiles can represent positive and negative integers. A red tile and a yellow tile combine to model 0. One yellow tile can represent +1 One red tile can represent -1 +1 This is called a ZERO PAIR -1

Integers can be modeled in many ways. Here are 2 ways to model +5. In the second example, 1 yellow tile and 1 red tile makes a zero pair. The pair models 0. B)

Draw -4 in 3 different ways. Hint: You will have more red tiles than you will yellow tiles in all your examples. How many different ways could you create -4?
