Unit 4: Properties of Matter and the Analysis of Glass

Physical properties Physical properties describes a substance without reference to any other substance. Weight Volume Color boiling point melting point

chemical properties A chemical property describes the behavior of a substance when it reacts to or combines with another substance.

Matter Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.

elements An element is a fundamental particle of matter that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

elements

The Atom The smallest particle of an element that can exist and still retain its identity as that element is the atom.

The Atom The smallest particle of an element that can exist and still retain its identity as that element is the atom.

Compounds A compound is a pure substance composed of two of more elements. The smallest unit is a molecule.

States of matter The three states of matter are Solid

States of matter The three states of matter are Solid liquid

States of matter The three states of matter are Solid Liquid Gas

Phases of Matter A phase is a uniform body of matter distinguished from other matter by definite visible boundaries.
