Overview of the Presidency Unit 2: Branches

The P.O.T.U.S & The F.L.O.T.U.S The most powerful elected position in the Democratic Free World is a common phrase to describe the President of the United States. White House Tour Inside the First Family’s Residence

I. Qualifications Natural born citizen At least 35 yrs of age Residency for at least 14 yrs Above are Constitutional requirements- What are “unwritten” requirements?

II. Term of office Four years Maximum of 2 elected terms Washington’s precedent was institutionalized by Amendment 22. Passage of 22nd amendment was due to Republican Congress’ concern over future FDR’s Possible to serve under 10 yrs in office if a VP becomes President just after the midpoint of a President’s term. For example: If Obama died in January of 2010, Biden would take over until 2012. Biden then runs for the presidency in 2012 and wins. He decides to run in 2016, and wins. He technically served 2 ½ terms. = 10 yrs

III. Compensation Set by Congress. Cannot be raised or lowered during President’s term of office for fear of Congress using undue influence Salary was raised from $200,000 to $400,000 in 2001. (first raise since 1969) Numerous other “perks” An opportunity to make serious money after leaving office

IV. Succession If office of presidency is vacant due to death, resignation, or impeachment and removal Then VP takes over to finish out term If President is disabled- 25th amendment applies If the Zombie apocalypse hits the order of succession stated in 25th amendment applies Donald Trump’s “Mental Fitness”

Essential Knowledge Discuss the 22nd amendment. Explain the pattern of succession. Discuss how the “unwritten requirements” can impact a presidency.
