Neurons and Nervous System
Most axons of the nervous system are surrounded by a myelin sheath (myelinated axons) The presence of myelin speeds up the transmission of action potentials.

Myelin again Myelin speeds up the nerve impulse because nerve fibers have Schwann cells around them – Schwann cells restrict ion movement – So impulse.
NEURON ANATOMY. NEURON Dendrites: (dend = tree) cell processes that carry electric impulses from an incoming nerve to a cell body. Hundreds per neuron.
Parts of the neuron. The Parts of the Neuron 1. Dendrites - receive incoming messages to the nerve cell - resemble tree branches.

Saltatory conduction in nerve impulses How the myelin sheath speeds up the conduction of nerves impulses

Neuron axon details Insulating, myelin sheath cells

Saltatory Conduction Depolarization only occurs in the gaps between myelin sheath cells. These gaps are called, nodes of Ranvier Na+ Na+ Na+ + + + + + + depolarization + + + - - - - depolarization The Myelin layer prevents the movement of Na+ & K+ ions through the axon membrane. The impulse jumps from node to node – a process called saltatory conduction
