Figure 2 Strategies for the Use of DNA Vaccines and/or CpG ODN to Counter the Threat Posed by Biowarfare Agents (A) DNA vaccines (blue) induce a protective antigen-specific immune response prior to pathogen exposure (red). (B) Unfortunately, this response develops too slowly to prevent pathology if vaccination is delayed until after infection (cross). (C and D) CpG ODN (green) stimulate a rapid protective innate immune response if administered prior to and, in some cases, after pathogen exposure. The outcome of such treatment can either result in survival or death (dashed red lines). (E and F) Optimally, CpG ODN administered in combination with DNA vaccine induce a rapidly protective innate immune response that synergistically boosts Ag-specific immunity.
