Fireworks Inquiry Unit Day 7-8

Common Core Connections Objectives: Today I will be able to: Determine the wavelength of the color of light for each firework in my sequence Calculate the wavelength, energy and frequency of each firework in my sequence Informal assessment – monitoring student interactions and questions as they design their fireworks sequence Formal assessment – analyze student wavelength, frequency and energy calculations Common Core Connections Build Strong Content Knowledge Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them Model with mathematics Reason abstractly and quantitatively Use technology and digital media strategically and capably

Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up Engage/Explore: Finish Fireworks Sequence Calculations Elaborate: Fireworks Sequence Extensions Elaborate/Evaluate: Fireworks Sequence Timeline Evaluate: Exit Ticket

Warm Up Find your new seat  What color of visible light has the shortest wavelength? What color of visible light has the lowest frequency? What color of visible light has the highest energy? Review your old exam. Ms. Ose will recollect the exam

Objectives Today I will be able to: Determine the wavelength of the color of light for each firework in my sequence Calculate the wavelength, energy and frequency of each firework in my sequence

Homework Begin studying for your Electrons Unit Exam Tuesday, November 11

What is the relationship between energy, wavelength and frequency? Investigative Questions What is the relationship between energy, wavelength and frequency?

Student Task 1 Determine the wavelength for the color of light emitted in each firework. Record the wavelength on the card. Complete the calculations to determine the frequency and the energy of the firework. Show all work on the back of the card.

Student Sample Front of Card Back of Card

Student Task 2 Your teacher will provide you with 6 additional fireworks to storyboard. Your teacher will assign you a specific wavelength, frequency or energy. Create a complete storyboard card for each additional firework following the same model as before.

Student Task 3 Construct a timeline sequence for the 12 fireworks in your display. The teacher will provide the requirements for the order the fireworks should be displayed in (ex. Increasing wavelength, decreasing energy, etc). All of the information on the storyboard card should be placed onto the timeline. Your peers and your teacher will evaluate the timeline.

Peer Review of Fireworks Storyboard

Exit Ticket Have a partner check your sequence. Did you order the sequence of fireworks correctly? What did your partner change and why?
