Post-Apocalyptic Literature.

People have long been fascinated with imagining what the world would be like after an earth-shattering event and how the human race would survive it (or not).

What is an apocalypse? Apocalyptic events in fiction include nuclear war, natural disasters, human overpopulation and destruction of the environment, the wrath of God, alien invasion, or mysterious and unknown forces.

Sometimes the apocalyptic event is sudden and shocking, and sometimes it is a slow buildup that ends in total chaos. Sometimes this event happened centuries before, or just yesterday.

What happens when the apocalypse ends? The specifics of the horrible event are not important for the story as are the portrayals of the people coping with the dreadful conditions of society. What is often most interesting about this genre is what people do when all the social structures they have previously known are gone. We like to put ourselves in the position of the characters and consider what we would do in their shoes.
