Shabbat (the Sabbath day) Lesson objectives: To know what ‘Shabbat’ is and how it is celebrated To understand why Shabbat is important To evaluate whether there should be a national day of rest

What is Shabbat? Shabbat = ‘ceasing’. It is a day of rest (it is not on Sunday!) On this day, Jews are no allowed to work at all. This includes cooking, prep and other activities. Everything needs to be done in advance! It is a time of celebration which looks back to 2 events in Jewish history: The creation of the world – God rested on the 7th day When God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites on the way to the Promised Land. One of them was to keep the ‘Sabbath’ day holy

What happens during Shabbat? In your books, draw an arrow going from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset Using pages 74-77 to help you, cut out the cards and stick them in the correct place on your timeline. If you finish, answer the questions on your sheet

Do you think the UK should have a national day of rest? This is where everyone in the whole country (religious or not) would have to take one day off a week.

Prep Write a paragraph explaining your own opinion about whether the UK should have a national day of rest. Want a bit more of a challenge?: Write a diary entry from the perspective of someone celebrating Shabbat. In the extract, make sure you include the following: 1) what you did 2) what you enjoyed about Shabbat and 3) what you found difficult about not doing any work on Shabbat)
