Presentation transcript:

Cells to Systems 5th GRADE SCIENCE Students will be able to order and explain the levels of organization in the human body. Students will be able to explain what would occur if one of the levels of organization was missing.

What materials do you need to build this?

Activity Groups of 2 Inside each envelope are building blocks of the human body. Organize the pictures from simplest to most complex (not smallest to largest). Discuss WHY you organized them in this way.

Atom Atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter. What do we already know about atoms? Hint: protons, electrons, neutrons

Cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function within all living things.   They are made up of atoms and molecules. Different types of cells serve different purposes.

Tissues Tissues are specialized groups of cells that work together. Tissues perform jobs such as transporting materials or covering parts of the body. An example of a tissue would be muscle tissue.

Organs An organ is a group of two or more different types of tissue that work together to perform a specific function. What are some organs of animals? What are some organs of plants?

Organ System Organs work together to form an organ system. Can you name this organ system? Brainstorm other organ systems.

Human Body Organ systems work together to make a living organism – YOU!!!

Think about it! Take a minute and discuss with your shoulder partner what would happen we had no organ systems (i.e. the circulatory system that we discussed earlier)??

Time to SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW! Based on what you know, complete the HUMAN BODY formative assessment. Be sure to: State which student best describes the human body. Explain your thinking to support your claim. NO!! 
