Another word for opposite number is the additive inverse When you add a number and its opposite, you get zero

Think of some real life examples where something goes forward and backward or up and down.

Integers are either positive, negative or zero. Think of all the negative numbers on one team Think of all the positive numbers on another team Zeroes are not on any team

If the positives are a bigger number, they win. If the negatives are a bigger number, they win If the positives and negatives are the same, you get zero
