Strategy: Graphic organizers Graphic organizers are a form of structured prewriting that can help students plan their writing to help them create better first drafts (Ferris and Hedgcock, 2011). Graphic organizers are visual representations of information. They can be lists, diagrams, or 3-D items. After freewriting on a topic, graphic organizers can help students in the prewriting stage prepare first drafts that are well organized. Sample graphic organizers are in our textbook on pages 152 (fig. 4.6) and 153 (fig. 4.7).
