Fig. 1 Dr. Calvin B. Ernst, as first Secretary-Treasurer of SAVS and as sixth president has provided effective leadership making valuable contributions to vascular surgery in general and to SAVS. Fig. 2 Doctor John H. Foster conceived of the idea and provided inspiring leadership for development of SAVS serving as president for the first two formulative years. His innovative thoughts and efforts stimulated enthusiastic participation of other leaders in vascular surgery with either southern heritage or contributions while serving in the South.
