Lesson 1 – General Introduction Outline Living a life consistent with being justified by grace through faith 12:1 – 15:13 Final exhortations, personal plans, and some greetings 15:14 – 16:27 APPLICATION 4

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 Roman saints are exhorted to “admonish one another” since they were filled with “all goodness and knowledge” 15:14 Unless they practiced the principles taught in Rom 14, they could not accomplish this

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 Paul admits he wrote “boldly” 15:15a He did so to “remind” the saints of certain truths re: salvation, etc. 15:15b-16 Paul would only boast in Christ and his labors for His kingdom 15:17-19

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 Paul also states his “philosophy” re: his labors…he always wanted to go where Christ was not previously named 15:20-21 A fulfillment of prophecy…especially re: the Gentiles Isa 52:15

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 Paul also exhorts the Roman disciples to “keep their eyes on those who cause dissensions & hindrances contrary to the doctrine…” 16:17a They must “turn away” from such 16:17b

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 They must act this way because such dissenters are not slaves of Christ…they only care about their own appetites 16:18a They use deceptive words to influence others with their error 16:18b

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 How does this relate to Application #6? Differences over personal scruples were to be tolerated 14:1 – 15:13 This is different…this concerned issues that were “contrary to truth” Thus, judgment & even rejection

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 They were to be “wise in what is good, and innocent in what is evil” 16:19 In the end, God would “crush Satan under their feet” 16:20 Based on faith, knowledge of truth

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Exhortations 15:14-21 16:17-20, 25-27 God “establishes” His children in their “obedience of faith” 16:25a, 26b This is accomplished through revealed truth…the “mystery” hidden for ages 16:25b-26 Eph 3:1-6 1 Pet 1:9b-12 2 Pet 1:19-21

The Letter’s Conclusion 15:14 – 16:27 Travel Plans 15:22-33 Paul had long desired to come to Rome, but he was “hindered” v. 22 1:9-10 This “hindrance” = his pressing work to go “where Christ was not named” 15:20-21 No longer a need “in these regions” v. 23
