ENGLISH I CURRICULUM Learning Goal: To develop and refine reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills every day. Engage in intense discussions about literature and writing Collaborate to solve problems Learn to write and speak clearly and argumentatively Write creatively (free writes) and read non-fiction material outside of pressures of high-stakes testing preparation Intensify knowledge of literary terms and vocabulary words

Classroom Guidelines

Guideline #1 Bring ALL books and materials to class and take them with you when you leave.

Materials 3-Ring Binder Pens Lined Paper Flash Drive

Not Following Guidelines will result in: First offense Warning and documentation Second offense Action Plan, parental contact, and possible 30-minute after-school or lunch detention Third offense Disciplinary referral to the Main Office

Entering the room Read the class objectives and related steps posted at the front of the room. Please be seated in your assigned seat as the teacher begins talking (within 5 seconds after the tardy bell). Take out the materials you will need for the day.

Finish Classwork Early “What do I do next?”

What Do I Do Next? Activities Work on unfinished English assignments Read a “choice” novel Review vocabulary words Start working on tonight's homework or other long-term assignments Receive a punctuation/grammar worksheet

Classroom Discussions PLEASE participate I want to hear what you have to say Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask later

Class Dismissal Never gather by the door to wait for the end-of-period bell to ring. Do not start packing up prior to the bell – it’s disruptive. If desks are in the right places and materials have been returned, you may leave when the bell rings.
