Early-onset compartment syndrome of the limbs, a rare complication of meningococcal septicemia in infants?  Norbert Pallua, Konrad Heimann, Faris Almarzouqi, Stefan Bohr  JPRAS Open  Volume 5, Pages 51-55 (September 2015) DOI: 10.1016/j.jpra.2015.06.002 Copyright © 2015 The Authors Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Time course of selected laboratory parameters. Key events such as surgical fasciotomy (blue vertical line) and end of catecholamine-treatment (green vertical lines) are highlighted. Data suggests a surgical intervention at significantly lower CK-values compared to adults (threshold > 4000–6000 U/l).12 A rise in chloride levels preceded a rise of CK-values and is likely to be indicative of muscle injury. Figure 2 Macroscopic appearance of meningococcal disease-induced soft tissue damage. Shown: (A) presentation with confluent petechial areas; (B1-4) Fasciotomy performed on all extremities demonstrated ischemic, are active muscle tissue along with signs of thrombosis (arrow). (C1-2) Repeated debridement was performed following demarcation of necrotic skin and muscle tissue (arrows); (D1-3) Minor skin necrosis healed spontaneously through auto-debridement; (E1-4) Wound closure was achieved without major amputations (day 80).
