Topic Sentences (with Veracruz example) (The TS is in blue.)
Topic sentences are sort of like thesis statements for your body paragraphs. A clear topic sentence will establish the main idea of the paragraph so that the reader understands what each body paragraph is about. The topic sentence does not need to be the very first sentence of the paragraph, but it should be near the beginning. When writing the topic sentence for a body paragraph, consider the main idea of the paragraph. If you have already chosen the sub-points for your essay, it will make it even easier, since each body paragraph will focus on one sub-point.
Consider the following sample essay thesis statements Although there are many complaints that people have about living in El Puerto de Veracruz, Veracruz is still one the most desirable places to live on the Gulf coast of Mexico. OR Although many people claim that El Puerto de Veracruz is the best coastal city on the Gulf of Mexico, there are several reasons why Veracruz is no longer such a desirable place to live.
Brainstorming Consider using the “pros and cons” technique for this topic. You are collecting reasons “why” and “why not.”
Write for topic sentences. Topic sentence #1. You will take the opposing point of view and admit that the opposition has some good points. Topic sentence #2 This is your first reason in support of the thesis that you have chosen. Topic sentence #3 This is the second reason in support of the thesis that you have chosen. Topic sentence #4 This is the third reason in support of the thesis that you have chosen.

There are reasons to believe that…. It is true that… It is clear that…. Topic sentence #2 This is your first reason in support of the thesis that you have chosen. One reason that/why…. One way that…. Topic sentence #4 This is the third reason in support of the thesis that you have chosen. Still another reason that/why….(dogs make the best pets) Still another way that….(assault weapons should be made illegal) --passive voice
