Chemical Reactions All chemical reactions can be placed into one of six categories.
Chemical Reactions. In a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged to form new compounds. The starting substances = reactants Ending substances = products.

Presentation transcript:

Reaction Types Outcome: S2-2-07 Investigate and classify chemical reactions as synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, or combustion.

Synthesis (direct combination) Two or more substances react to produce a single substance. General Form: A + B  AB Example: N2 + 3H2  2NH3 Animation

Decomposition A single compound is broken down into two or more substances. General Form: AB  A + B Example: 2KClO3  2KCl + 3O2 Animation

Single Replacement Atoms of an element replace the atoms of a second element or compound. General Form: A + BC  B + AC Example: 2Na + Mg(OH)2  Mg + 2NaOH Animation

Double Replacement +   Involves the exchange of positive ions between two ionic compounds. General Form: AB + CD  AD + CB Example: Al2(SO4)3 + 3Ca(OH)2  2Al(OH)3 + 3CaSO4 +  Pink Panther + Black Eye Black Panther + Pink Eye  Animation

Combustion Reaction of a hydrocarbon and oxygen. General Form: Hydrocarbon + O2  CO2 + H2O Example: C3H8 + 5O2 3CO2 + 4H2O

Balancing Combustion Reactions Combustion reactions can be tricky to balance…  The trick is to balance in alphabetical order… Carbons  Hydrogens  Oxygens Ex) C3H8 + O2  CO2 + H2O   C2H6 + O2  CO2 + H2O Try this one… C6H14 + O2  CO2 + H2O
