Presentation transcript:

Variation vs adaptation Variation refers to an individual (or population) that possesses characteristics different from the others of the same kind arising from the alternate form(s) of the allele.

Variation vs adaptation Adaptation is any heritable characteristic that increases an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce Adaptation can be an anatomical, behavioral or physiological trait.

Animal Adaptations Which of these will most likely result in variation within a species? A. mutation B. succession C. diffusion D. competition Rabbits that live in warm climates have larger ears than rabbits that live in cold climates. Larger ears allow rabbits to cool themselves by releasing body heat. Which term describes this characteristic? A. alteration B. mutation C. adaptation D. recombination

Bird Beaks Lab Focus Question: Explain how adaptations help organisms survive in specific environments. In your groups you will be bird with different types of beaks. You will be assessing how well your bird’s beak is adapted to each environment. You will have 20 seconds to “eat” the food in your environment Would your bird survive in that environment?!
