Spains Decline Spain’s dominance declines in the New World 3 reasons: Pirates of the Caribbean's- Pirates like Sir Francis Drake robbed ships and ports Lack of excitement for colonization by Spanish people Spain’s over focus on Mercantilism (focus on gold, exports over imports)

France in the New World France: French merchants were the first to explore part of Canada the French didn’t find gold, but did make a large profit off fur trading French had good relations with the Indians

England in the New World England: the English colonized the east coast of N. America first colony in the New World was Roanoke on the Carolina Coast (Known as Lost Colony) Virginia Dare becomes the first English child born in the New World two years later

Jamestown Jamestown (1607) – the first permanent English settlement in America prospered under the leadership of John Smith who harvested of tobacco Becomes the first English settlement to import slaves in 1619
