7C44 Who’s Who Classify Microbes

Background Diseases caused by different microbes are prevented and treated differently. So Leeuwenhoek’s discovery of microbes and Pasteur’s germ theory of disease are essential. Find out more by using more evidence to classify microbes.

Materials Each group of four will get: 9 Micro-Life cards 6 Classification cards

Procedure A Spread your Micro-Life cards out on a table. Each microbe card shows high magnification of the outside and a drawing of the inside. Examine all nine cards carefully noting similarities and differences. With your team classify microbes into groups. On your lab sheet list the groups you created, their features, and the microbes in the group.

Procedure B 5. Compare your work to the other teams. 6. Discuss how they are similar or different. 7. Now you will get 6 Classification cards. Each card represents a group of creatures. Based on that info place each Micro-Life card under one of the Classification card categories. In your lab-book, make any changes you made to groupings. 8. Discuss as a class, and record all common features of each major group.

C44 Classify Analysis: 1 paragraph 1. How could knowing the classification and structure of microbes help fight their disease? 2. Look at the animal cell on pC59 of your text. Compare that to the structures on pC72 of: a. protists b. bacteria c. viruses
