Learning Targets I can identify theme and literary devices. I can explain how a literary device can support theme. I can write an analysis paragraph, including a topic sentence, text evidence, and analysis.

Read Aloud: “Billy’s Walk” Preview the questions. Read for: Theme, literary devices. Annotate! Complete the four questions at the bottom.

Body Paragraph Structure Each body paragraph should have THREE PARTS: IDENTIFY- identify the direction (literary device) you will be discussing EVIDENCE- give text evidence (quotes) of the literary device you are discussing LINK- connect your device to the universal idea. How does the device support, express, or add to the theme?

Body Paragraph Structure Using the thesis as our map, what will the first body paragraph be about? In “Billy’s Walk,” the author uses chilling metaphors, dark repetition, and powerful imagery to prove that death leads to pain and anger.

In “Billy’s Walk,” the author uses chilling metaphors, dark repetition, and powerful imagery to prove that death leads to pain and anger. First, the author uses chilling metaphors to prove that death leads to pain and anger. For example, “his tears fled down his face in icy rivers.” Billy is crying because his fiancée has died, and this metaphor is used to show what his crying was like. Also, “pain mixed with rage…flooded his body.” This is another metaphor, comparing his feelings to a flood. These metaphors are chilling because they describe his grief as cold, sad, and overwhelming, like ice and floods. They prove that death leads to pain and anger because they emphasize how bad Billy’s pain is after losing Heather- it is freezing him and flooding over him.

LINK= ANALYSIS LINK- connect literary device to the universal idea. How does the device support, express, or add to the theme? How does the use of this element PROVE the big idea? How does the use of this element connect to the big idea? Why did the author choose to use this element? What effect does the element have on the piece? On the reader? How would the piece be different without this element?

Use Verbs in the LINK Make your literary element DO something! See language of analysis also.

Write your first body paragraph Write your thesis on a piece of paper. Start a new paragraph- your first body paragraph.
