Annotation A detailed analysis of text. Reading and Viewing Outcomes 4.4/6.2/7.1/7.2/7.3

Purpose Scrutinize each word/phrase the author has used. Be able to explain the significance of the passage and its relation to the entire work of literature. Link the passage thematically to the text.

What to look for See your Rules of Notice hand-out, literary terms hand-out, and your notes on doing a close reading. Word Level: meaning: diction, denotation/connotation Sentence Level: figurative language and literary devices Text Level: Literary devices and elements of fiction

Strategy First reading—get the main idea and gist 2nd reading—be sure you understand all words and their possible multiple meanings. Use your literary analysis skill to look for figurative language and literary devices, character development, characterization, themes, motifs, symbols, etc. BE SURE TO USE LITERARY TERMINOLGY. Determine a method to document/record your information and ideas.
